Title: Rewrite the Rulebook
Author: tastewithouttalent
Canon: Haikyuu!!
Pairing: Keishin Ukai/Ittetsu Takeda
Rating: Explicit [NC-17]
Word Count: 100,930
Summary: ""Karasuno needs a coach."" Takeda knows what the volleyball team needs, and he's determined to get it at all costs. Ukai is prepared to resist but he's not prepared for Takeda.

Recommendation: Happy New Year, readers! May this one be better than our last two (I won't hold my breath, but I'm still hopeful). And what better way to kick off the new year but an epic length story that is absolutely my headcanon for what was up with these two while the team was busy having their sports anime. It is just so wonderful and perfect!

Title: Return to the Labyrinth
Author: ArtemisFallen
Canon: Labyrinth
Pairing: Sarah Williams/Jareth
Rating: Teen [PG]
Word Count: 107,901
Summary: Thirteen years after the events of the Labyrinth, Sarah finds herself increasingly disappointed with her life and the world in which she lives. She has all but forgotten her adventures in the Labyrinth and the terrifying, yet handsome Goblin King, convinced that her adventure was nothing more than an elaborate dream produced by her adolescent imagination. Until one day, she rediscovers the little book that started it all. This sparks several memories and Sarah comes to realize what she couldn't understand when she was younger; the Goblin King, Jareth, loved her. Wishing she could relive such a love again, even if it was just a dream, Sarah wishes for the Goblin King to take her away just before falling asleep. But when Sarah awakens, she finds herself in a much different world than the one she had visited before. The Labyrinth is a chaotic, decaying and crumbling place, with deadly beasts who hunt by night and an evil Queen who has lain claim over the Labyrinth and the Goblin City. She has also captured and imprisoned the near powerless Goblin King. Now it is up to Sarah to save the Labyrinth and the Goblin King before it is too late and prove her love to Jareth as she was unable to do many years ago.

Recommendation: This is epic! And it deserves a full review but I'm pressed for time at the moment so suffice it to say that, it is wonderful and I will probably be back to give it a proper write up later.

Title: Moving On, Forward (Come in Lost Soul)
Author: pushingcrazies
Canon: Angel | Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Jonathan Levinson/Dennis Pearson; side of Winifred 'Fred' Burkle/Charles Gunn/Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
Rating: Explicit [NC-17]
Word Count: 203,089
Summary: Jonathan and Andrew are on the run to Mexico when a chance encounter in Los Angeles sets them on a new path - one with consequences neither could have foreseen.

Recommendation: Uh, this was so good! I love long plotty stories about minor and background characters that both flesh them out and let them change thing by their inclusion in the main plot but also don't make them something other then what they were. Jonathan and Andrew are not suddenly super powered, they are themselves thrust into new circumstances and given new opportunities. I also loved that they don't magically know all the things that are going on with the regular Angel and Buffy cast. I loved the building of the relationship between Jonathan and Dennis it was so good. *sigh* I can't say enough good things about this one.

Title: Pokémon, Beyoncé and a Cute Christmas Sweater
Author: sosioban
Canon: Almost Human
Pairing: Richard Paul/MX-43
Rating: Teen [PG]
Word Count: 130,943
Summary: Richard's MX has bought him a gift that sends them both on a quest for Gym Badges. Somewhere along the way Richard develops an attachment to the members of his Pokémon team- and to his MX. What they discover in a game may end up changing things in the real world as well. A.K.A. the one where they play Pokemon, being silly saves the world, and some MXs have f'd up priorities.

Recommendation: I love it when a rare pairing gets an epic length story, and I love "cops and robots" so this right off the bat checked two serious boxes of mine. I love that it starts with just Paul and his MX learning to play together but you get hints that a larger plot is going on in the background before it intrudes on their Pokemon time. I love that sosioban hit a nice balance between having the MX grow into an individual but not to have it seem just like Dorian with his synthetic soul. Robots knitting, too wonderful. ;)

Title: Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Author: Amejisuto
Canon: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Xander Harris/William 'Spike' Pratt
Rating: Explicit [NC-17]
Word Count: 133,138
Summary: Xander and Spike meet in the summer after the Master's death while Buffy is in L.A., visiting her Dad and a friendship develops.

Recommendation: Oh man, I'm feeling all nostalgic over Spander. I get that way off and on, though I have to admit to being a little thrown by how long ago this was on. Crap, I feel old. Funnily enough, I had not read this one until recently despite it being, to my knowledge, one of the old standbys. If you don't read it for any other reason, you need to read it for the friendship between Xander and Cordy. They are the very best bitchy gay best friends and all of their interactions sparkle. The inclusion of Giles and Ethan as mentors was really good too.

Title: In An Ideal World, Things Would Have Been Different
Author: nanuk_dain
Canon: The Sinking of the Laconia
Pairing: Werner Hartenstein/Thomas Mortimer
Rating: Explicit [NC-17]
Word Count: 127,914
Summary: Sometimes you meet the right person at the very wrong time, Hartenstein thinks while he's watching the Wehrmacht soldiers lead Mortimer away to their waiting vehicle.

Recommendation: So I am WEAK to small fandoms especially ones about honorable, restrained men serving during either of the world wars so it is no surprise that I would become utterly enamored of this wonderful and epic story by the fantastic Nanuk Dain. I would recommend this to anyone in fandom like BoB, The Pacific, or Dunkirk even if you have not seen this mini-series because it is so good and only a cursory knowledge of the incident is needed. All of the obvious research, all of the feelings, all of the angst and drama, and to add to all that a period believable happily-ever-after conspire to make this a true delight. :D

Title: A Minbari Courtship series
Author: BainAduial
Canon: Babylon 5
Pairing: Marcus Cole/Neroon; Lennier/OMC; later on Susan Ivanova/Talia Winters
Rating: General - Teen [G - PG]
Word Count: 170,608
Summary: A formal Minbari courtship amidst the realities of war and a changing universe.

Recommendation: OMG, so epic! I love how well thought out this was, all of the world-building for Minbar and the Star Riders clan was just so great. I love the descriptions for the Star Riders' estate, it really made it come alive. I was also super impressed that BainAduial came up with FIFTY rituals that didn't feel superfluous but felt meaningful. It was such a throwaway line in the show, but to actually plot them all out. Super impressed. I loved the extra backstory for Marcus and I loved that Lennier gets to walk a better path, and that someone remembers Talia! Save them all!

Title: Allies
Author: kanadka
Canon: Babylon 5
Pairing: Marcus Cole/Neroon
Rating: Mature [R]
Word Count: 146,715
Summary: The Rangers' cover was blown on Zagros VII, but they're not done with the Drazi yet. Marcus is sent back to see what he can do to make amends and possibly a new Ranger outpost, while he's at it. Unfortunately, he's still healing from his bout with Neroon, and will need some assistance. He's a little disappointed with the Entil'Zha's choice in bodyguard.

Recommendation: Wow, just wow. This was so great! Just all the wonderful details about the Drazi and the Minbari that fits with the show's canon but builds on it and even explains some of the weaker points from the show. Stellar OCs, a gripping plot, and a delicious slow build with canon and AU endings for every mood.

Title: The Changing Fate series
Authors: ilyena_sylph & Merfilly
Canon: Star Wars - the Prequel Trilogy
Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi; Padmé Amidala/Anakin Skywalker
Rating: General - Teen [G - PG]
Word Count: 187,695
Summary: In a galaxy where Qui-Gon Jinn doesn't let Darth Maul bait him ahead of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the events of the Prequel Trilogy fall out quite differently. How will it all play out when Master Qui-Gon Jinn trains Anakin Skywalker, with a helping hand from Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Recommendation: Happy Christmas! I hope this finds you all safe and happy (whether you celebrate or not). :D Consider this a Christmas present from me to you because this story really is a gift. ;) I'm not going to lie, long long ago when I was a wee little internet lurker I totally shipped QuiObi after the prequel movies came out despite the fact that I usually don't go for such a large age difference. But beyond my ship-y feelings, this is so great because I was always convinced that Qui-Gon would have been a much better master for Anakin and that the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin would have been better if it genuinely was brotherly instead of teacher/father figure-esque. This story also did something rather unexpected for me. I've never shipped Anidala, wait wait, let me explain. Their relationship is canon. It just is, like trees. It didn't need to be "shipped" per se. But in this story they meet again earlier (and someone does right by Shmi, thank Force) and Anakin, who has adjusted well with Qui-Gon as his master, though still utterly devoted to Padme wants their relationship to have a good solid friendship to build off of. So I found myself shipping these two so hard and happy in the knowledge that they would be together in due time and there would likely still be Force twins and that they would be able to be a happy family, and *sigh* yeah, I didn't expect that. Oh and there are truly wonderful clone trooper OCs. :D All the good things!

Title: And No Net Ensnares Me
Author: thimbleful
Canon: Game of Thrones | ASOIAF
Pairing: Sansa Stark/Jon Snow
Rating: Explicit [NC-17]
Word Count: 130,532
Summary: Since Jon left, Sansa has struggled to keep things together and she longs for his return. However, when he does return things only become worse. Jon learns about his parentage and doesn't know how to make sense of anything, how to fix the inevitable mess the reveal will create, or how to protect the people he loves. But at least, after all these years, the pack is finally back together. Then, one day, Sansa disappears.
Post season 7 fic.

Recommendation: This. Is. Epic. And it's not just the word count, but also the scope of the story as it tries to bring all the threads of the show to a logical and satisfying conclusion. A tall order, one I really don't think the show was even able to manage, but I really did enjoy this attempt. Dany and Cersei both tip the scale on the crazy-meter, but ironically enough it is an original character, Tisiph, that I most associate with this story. She is so well written that sometimes I forget that she isn't someone from canon as she fits so seamlessly into this world. There are a number of really good OCs in this one, truthfully, but she is most intrinsic to the plot and my favorite. Sansa is cleverer than everyone, Arya is badass, and Jon is a noble idiot, but all of those things are standard operating procedure.

Title: The Neither Here Nor There series
Author: mordelle
Canon: Beetlejuice
Pairing: Lydia Deetz/Betelgeuse
Rating: Mature - Explicit [R - NC-17]
Word Count: 184,720
Summary: Sector Eight. This is where Lydia found herself, on the other side, soul suspended between life and death with no recourse to get out of her predicament. Suddenly, a face came to mind. She might have a way out, after all. Would a menacing poltergeist come to her rescue? Not without a price, certainly. *Post film w/ cartoon shoutouts. Part I/II*

Recommendation: This was EPIC! And it was marvelous. The first installment was a fun and sexy romp that was super fun, but you can not stop there. No really you can't unless you content to have your heart broken. Proceed directly to installment number two and I promise that it will make things better. One of the biggest pluses for me in this story was all of the support characters, the Maitlands and Delia and a wonderful selection of characters repurposed from the cartoon and adjusted to fit a more grown up story. There is even a delightful child OC, and that is usually something I can't stand but I found her to be pitch perfect. Finally, the relationship between Lydia and Betelgeuse is a roller coaster ride but in the very best way.

Title: The Horseshoe Nail series
Author: Dyce
Canon: Firefly | Serenity
Pairing: River Tam/Jayne Cobb
Rating: Teen - Mature [PG - R]
Word Count: 237,773
Summary: Jayne is left all alone with a bad leg and a crazy girl for two days. It doesn't go as badly as it could.

Recommendation: So this is like a birthday present to myself. I've loved this epic for ages and frankly I think it's even better than the canon 'cause spoiler alert, everybody lives. I love that Jayne and River start out as real friends and it only grows from there. I've always loved a good slow build, and this most assuredly fits the bill. What is also wonderful is how this growing relationship affects the rest of the crew who are in no way neglected. All around a perfect gift.

Title: The Partners series
Author: Kittah4
Canon: Zootopia
Pairing: Judy Hopps/Nicholas 'Nick' Wilde
Rating: General - Mature [G - R]
Word Count: 194,181
Summary: A collection of stories of various length and types about the evolving relationship between Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, starting from just as the movie Zootopia ends and beyond. Mostly lighthearted, there are a few intense moments, and some of the stories are cases.

Recommendation: I love that this starts even before the end of the movie and follows Nick and Judy as their relationship changes and grows, but that is not all it is. I really enjoyed all the many characters added or fleshed out, as well as the expansion of the world into other places.

Pairing: Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister
Rating: Teen [PG]
Word Count: 149,860
Summary: This is how it ends (or Jaime and Brienne and End Game).

Recommendation: This was Epic! Oh my God! This is basically A Song of Ice and Fire but without POVs other than Jaime and Brienne. Oh and complete. Let’s not forget that. I really liked that the author included notes at the end with some explanations about their narrative and character choices and process. It’s like getting to watch the “making of” extras for a movie.

Rating: Explicit [NC-17]
Word Count: 114,263
Summary: Set a few months after the PSoH manga ends: D has made a choice, but does he understand what he’s chosen? And can he and Leon deal with it?

Recommendation: This was marvelous and epic in length if not in scope. D becomes human to be with Leon and they must deal with the mostly mundane consequences of that decision, but there are compensations (really nice compensations). I love that many minor characters have been fleshed out and well thought out OCs have been added. All in all it was a very satisfying read.

Title: On the Night’s Watch
Author: Miss_M
Canon: Game of Thrones
Pairing: Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister
Rating: Mature [R]
Word Count: 105,820
Summary: Detective Brienne Tarth transfers to the King’s Landing Police Department and is assigned to permanent nightshift duty: the Night’s Watch, where careers go to die. As if that weren’t bad enough, her new partner is the infamous Jaime Lannister. When they land a time-sensitive missing person case, trusting each other is the only way they might solve the mystery.

Recommendation: If any other two characters scream odd-couple cop partners more than these two without already being cop characters, I don’t know about them. They just fit perfectly into a gritty modern Westeros. What happened to the victims was a little gut wrenching, but this is Games of Thrones, so, yeah.

Title: Fever
Author: Lady_in_Red
Canon: Game of Thrones
Pairing: Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister
Rating: Mature [R]
Word Count: 119,868
Summary: As a professional bull rider, Jaime Lannister cheated death, eight seconds at a time, for more than a decade. When his luck finally runs out, Brienne Tarth becomes his unlikely savior. A slow-burn romance set against a backdrop of dangerous sports and pop culture geekery in a Westeros-flavored United States.

Recommendation: One of the best things about this pairing is that you can take them and put them in any world, at any time and the tension, the uncertainty and the conflict to them being together translates. The “ugly” girl and the “handsome” man will always fly in the face of the conventional while their chemistry makes them undeniable which I suppose that is why I love it so much.

Title: The Seven Bind Their Fate
Author: RoseHeart
Canon: Game of Thrones | ASOIAF
Pairing: Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister
Rating: Mature [R]
Word Count: 191,702
Summary: What if Jaime became a prisoner of Renly Baratheon, instead of Robb Stark, and he met Brienne earlier? This story delves into the changing nature of Jaime and Brienne’s relationship in a time of war and shifting alliances and then explores how their journey, and the land, is changed by this small twist of fate.

Recommendation: So this shall be the inaugural post of what I’m going to call Straight Sundays (a little on the nose, I know, but I couldn’t resist) and they shall be every second and fourth Sunday in a month. I’m doing this because there just are some het pairings I want to rec for but it’s not nearly enough to start a whole new blog over.

This pairing will periodically consume me to the exclusion of all else because they are so singular. They embody so many different tropes including an inversion of the Beauty and the Beast and yet their chemistry is such that it does not feel ridiculous to picture them together, reliant on each other, and in love with each other. My first offering is epic and is more a Universe Alteration than an Alternate Universe, one event is changed and it has a ripple effect throughout the story. I adore how in character Jaime and Brienne are (well really everyone) but also the changes that are wrought in them both as a result of knowing each other earlier.
