Summary: Bilbo Baggins isn't sure about this. Not one bit. Frodo is definitely too young to enter into an arranged marriage with a dwarven king called Thorin Oakenshield. It's a good thing that Bilbo is there to chaperone him through their courtship. After all, there's no chance that a fussy hobbit bachelor would ever catch the eye of a king.

Recommendation: *deep breath* OH MY GOD, THIS WAS SO GOOD! Ahhh! So much pining, so many misunderstanding, so many feelings! I just . . . loved all of it. It's a very romance novel trope, but it's well fit into the Tolkienverse. There is a healthy smattering of other characters, but obviously the main show is Thorin and Bilbo circling each other. That said there was hints of a surprise OT3 by the end so there is that to also look forward to (hopefully that doesn't spoil it XD).

He leads an army toward the Shire, while Bilbo struggles to protect his fellow hobbits, himself, and his young cousin Frodo from encroaching wolves and orcs so they may all survive this winter.

Recommendation: Buckle up, this is a ride. Perhaps a little more Bilbo whump than I usually prefer, but he is so badass and his dwarves are so heroic. I love it when there is more interaction between dwarves and hobbits and it's the best when it is cooperation and collaboration. It just makes so much more sense than with men or elves really. This was seriously good stuff, and just the thing for a long winter read.

But then, Kíli was elbowing him rather hard, and perhaps in a place that was still tender. ~ Bilbo's fake-it-'til-you-make-it interpretation of dwarven culture is working quite well for him, thank you very much- all the way up until it really, really isn't.

Recommendation: Bilbo really pulls off the "fake it 'til you make it" in this one and he totally gets away with it without anyone ever really noticing it. It is pretty funny though when the penny finally drops. :D

The thing is probably cursed, and it's up to him to get it as far away from Thorin as he can - and while he's at it, he might as well try to stop a war before it starts. Rather than offering Bard and Thranduil the Arkenstone, Bilbo offers to give them his share of the treasure if they will please go away. Unfortunately, neither of them is willing to believe Thorin will hand it over - which leads to a ransom plan that is, in Bilbo's opinion, quite ridiculous and doomed to fail from the start. But at least that blasted stone is out of the mountain.

Recommendation: Bilbo is such a badass! I love this premise that means Bilbo never even appears to betray Thorin, Thranduil is fine playing the bad guy. Oh, and what Thorin agrees to give for Bilbo's safe return *fans self* holy crap, he's so serious. I love Bard, and Gandalf is boss. Gah, all of this was so good!
