I first gave them a try because I liked that they were peers/colleagues rather than mentor/mentee like Seven and the Captain (or Chakotay), but once I gave them a try I was sold. I feel like Seven is at less of an emotional maturity disadvantage because B'Elanna is not self-reflective but this gives them both the chance to grow together. Also, I feel that they are quite complementary.
