Day 8 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

Well crud, I am feeling at a distinct disadvantage with today's challenge for I am neither a fan-writer nor fan-artist. Up until now I've only had one type of fan-offering to bring to the table (yesterday was my first foray into making icons and I enjoyed it so after snowflake I think I will be revisiting that) so for today's challenge all I can rec is what I've got.

Fanfiction Recommendations by Isabelle Disraeli - I built a recommendations website/blog on WordPress. I created all of the graphics that I use there, the fandom and pairing banners as well as special banners for holidays, femslash, and other special tags. It has been a labor of love, and I suppose it could count as a fanwork in the broadest sense.

That's it, that's all I got. :D

Day 7 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you.

I decided to try to make some icons and to put them in a table. If anyone has any tips, tricks, or notices some glaring errors I'd not be averse to a little help. :D (And quick question, where do folks usually host their icons? I kind of winged it, but I'm curious.)

Non-Rec: A Fannish Wish-list

Day 6 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to the original challenge post.

I'm really not good at coming up with wish-lists ;P (much to the frustration of my spouse before gift-giving holidays ;)) So I started by looking at what other people were putting and I can totally think of things that I would like to see happen for fandom at large.

1. This is specifically for the MCU fandom. I would love to see more rare pairing and/or minor character fanfic in the coming year (especially for PoC characters). The MCU fandom is a mega-fandom certainly and there are a lot of major characters to play with, but what about the lesser used characters who have not been fleshed out much. The Warriors Three, the Howling Commandos? I went looking and stories starring them are rare and hard to find. They are also almost blank slates having only brief and/or archetypal characterization, perfect for fannish purposes. :D

2. I'd love to see more life in the comms on Dreamwidth. I've seen that on a few other wish-lists so I guess there is interest, we just all have to do our part. :)

3. I'd love to see either some of the old multi-fandom (panfandom) fanfic rec comms like

epic_recs or

crack_van be resurrected or for a new one to be established. (If there is an active one and I've missed it, please be a pal and point me that-away. ;D)

Day 5 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

Hmmm, let's see. Okay, I'll start with

stargateficrec (and not just because I'm one of the reccers for this month ;)), because there can never be too many SGA (or SG-1/SGU) fanfic recommendations. :D

And then how about

marvelrarepairs, it's an older comm that is being revived with some new energy and I never can resist the siren's call of a rare pairing. ;)

Finally, something a little different. Annlyel Online is one of the nice blogs I've encountered on WordPress, it's full of movie reviews, informal movie rankings, and fun character polls. And Annlyel is very nice herself. :)

And just because I would really like to see these two comm grow I'll throw in

bagginshield and

Day 4 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Woah, boy they know how to challenge an introvert. ;D I'd like to just be all "well I just did that, it should count even though I didn't know that it was going to become a challenge" but that seems a little to much like a cop out. I joined Dreamwidth fulling intending to start talking to people and now that it's a "challenge" I shouldn't let myself turn shy all of a sudden. *big sigh* Okay, I'm going to do it! . . . Any minute now . . .

Update: Okay! I've done the thing. *sigh* It's so much easier just commenting on things, then I don't think about it I'm focused on the fandom thing. Just breaking the ice an introducing myself :P, does not feel the same. All I have in my head is white noise **We're sorry the Isabelle you've been trying to reach is not in the network**

Non-Rec: A Slice of Canon

Day 3 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

Ugh, this is so much harder than the last two (but I suppose that's what makes it a challenge ;P).

Sometimes I'm really into the canon, but more often than not I fall in love with the fandom and fanon content instead. One of the biggest exceptions is anything to do with J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. *sigh* I am such a Tolkien nerd. My father gifted me with a secondhand copy of The Hobbit when I was about eleven or twelve and I have been in love ever since. The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion followed in the years after, but when Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy came out just as I was becoming an adult it felt like a rebirth of love. I love all of it, the casting, the acting, the sets, the props, the details, the locations, the movies, and the making ofs. One of the most effecting things was the music. I'm sure I'm not the only one to feel that way.

Fast forward, now I'm well and truly an adult™, and the new Hobbit trilogy has been released. Now, don't get me wrong there are a LOT of things I love about the newer trilogy, but a lot of the plotting and pacing did not work for me. (I've ended up loving more of the fandom/fanon side of the divide with this one.) But there is one moment in The Hobbit trilogy that for me captures the strange, magical feeling that I remember from my childhood and young adulthood. When Thorin and the dwarves all sing "Far Over the Misty Mountains" in Bilbo's front parlor, I am filled with a sense of profound loss and nostalgia for a place and time that has never been and never will be. It is the sum total of the feelings I hold for Middle-earth itself. I miss that place, regardless of whether it exists or not, with an aching sweetness that I feel I'll always carry with me.

Three! Just three. o_O LOL, I suppose I should stick to around three just so this doesn't get out of hand, and to make things even more interesting I'm only pulling from last month's readings. ;D

1. Area 51 by

Rodney is an FBI Agent assigned to Area 51. John is the proprietor of the local Alien Emporium. They meet when John calls in a mysterious sighting and Rodney is sent to question him.

After the losses suffered at the end of the show, Victor spirals into despair. As Henry tries to help him his most closely guarded secret is revealed. Meanwhile a new threat rises. This is the story of a friendship broken and remade.

3. The As He Swallows or Spits series by DragonintheLibrary | BlacKkKlansman, Ron Stallworth/Flip Zimmerman, Teen-Mature, No Warnings

Flip Zimmerman is very good at not thinking about things. He doesn’t think about being Jewish; he wears a Star of David because his Bubbie gave it to him years before she died, and it makes him feel closer to her. Flip doesn’t really think about his identity at all. He goes to work at the police department, but “cop” isn’t really how he thinks of himself. When Flip gets off work on Fridays he often drives to the edge of town and walks into the tiny bar with the blacked out windows. He has a couple of beers and sometimes he allows himself to be picked up by a guy, for sex in a car or a restroom or an alley, but he doesn’t describe himself as gay, even inside the privacy of his own head.

And 1 to grow on ;).

Non-Rec: Finding My Happy Place

Day 1 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

Gah! I'm so excited to be getting started with this! *deep calming breaths* Okay, my happy place will probably come as no surprise but the thing that picks me up when I'm down, calms me when I'm agitated and makes me feel at peace with the world is reading. Or more specifically reading fanfiction. I started recommending fanfiction, yes, to tell others about great stories and to give back to fandom but it was also in no small way so that I could keep track of the good stuff and easily find it when my mood called for it.

So this is a standing THANK YOU! to all the fanfiction writers who have, are, and will contribute to my Happy Place! I love all that you do, and from the very depths of my heart, I thank you for all comfort, relaxation, and joy that you have given me all these years! I hope that you are blessed in this New Year an always!
