Non-Rec: Round and Around and Around and Around We Go

So even though I bundled most of the challenges that I needed to catch up on, I thought that this one could use it's own post so I can do it justice.
One of my favorite tropes (I am so weak to it) is the old standby, Groundhog Day AU. If you are not familiar with it, it is based on a 1993 movie called Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. Murray plays a tv weatherman who is basically a crap human being, but he and a small crew are assigned to cover the Groundhog Day ceremonies in Punxsutawney, PA. They go through the day and he shows his jerk colors. But instead of waking up the next morning and having it be tomorrow, he finds that he must repeat the day over. He does this dozens, maybe hundreds, of times before he really starts to learn and improve as a person. Only once he shows genuine care for his love interest and behaves with a modicum of selflessness does he finally get to move on to tomorrow.
One of the chief reasons that I love this trope is that it gives characters, often with pretty severe issues, time to grow and change for the better in a space and time that they otherwise would not be able to which is one of the handy dandy things about time loops. Two of my favorite stories along this line both feature Eriks.
The Definition of Insanity by MildSpinning - Black Panther - features Erik Killmonger who needs time to work out his (justifiable) anger and come to realize that there is a better way with the help of T'Challa.
Other variations have more to do with trying to achieve a certain outcome in a set of circumstances with character development being more of a secondary concern.
Let It Be Yesterday, or Tomorrow by walkydeads - Until Dawn - I thought this one was hysterical as the whole doing it over and over again until you achieve the desired outcome is basically what one is doing if they are playing the game.
Sometimes it's not major issues that need to be worked out, sometimes there smaller more interpersonal issues that just need a little extra time. And sometimes the timeloop-ee is just a little thick.
‘Twas the Groundhog Day Before Christmas by poisonivory - DC Universe - Ted just needs to get over himself.
One last variation is characters not just looping through one day over and over, but instead looping through literal years of time.
Well, that is it. :D
Non-Rec: You Can Save, If You Bundle

Okay, I fell r-e-a-l-l-y behind and in an effort to catch up for the end I'm going to bundle and save time on some of the challenges that I missed. :D
The first thing I thought of when I read this challenge was that the ones that most inspired me are all of the rec'ers that have gone before. That feels a little vague, but it is true. I spent many happy years combing through rec lists put together by people that were passionate about fandoms, pairings, and even fanfics in general.
I feel like it is a little bit of a coup out, but my go to fannish resource is almost always the Fandom wiki or the Wikia (as it was previously known as). If I want to know what a character's birthday is, or if I can't remember at what point a character joined a show, or if I want to know the board strokes about a character so that I can get into reading fanfic from a new fandom I turn to the wikis. Bless you if you contribute or maintain these valuable fandom resources. You do good work, and you are very appreciated.
One of my favorites (that I have lost literal hours on) is the Wiki of Ice and Fire. There is just SO MUCH there. I love it.
So I feel a little uncomfortable in recounting my deeds of the day, but kindness has been shown and reflected on which I think is the spirit of the exercise. :D
So last but not least, my chiefest fannish work is an perpetually on-going project but lately my blog, Fanfiction Recommendations by Isabelle Disraeli, has been receiving a graphics face-lift. I figure that those graphics count as a fanwork even by themselves as I'm trying to capture the essence of the canon with a collage and font choices. ;D I've been working on trying to update the ones from older fandoms and here is a selection of the most recent (just click to view full sized):

Non-Rec: An Ever Expanding Horizon

So real life has been kicking my butt, but I thought I'd jump back in now that things have calmed do just a bit. I love all of the variations on 'be kind' that this challenge usually engenders as they are in fact rather needed and good, but I think I will go with something a little less profound for mine:
The challenge is to try a new fandom, canon, or pairing that you are not quite sure about. It doesn't have to work out so that you end up loving the new thing you can discover that you do, in fact, dislike the new thing, but I just thought it might be good for us to expand our fannish horizons. :D
I'll report back in with my findings.
Non-Rec: Ready the Canons!!

So I was a little torn when I saw this challenge, but I think I've settled on Star Wars Rebels. The Clone Wars is wonderful and it is so often the one that is recommended to others but I was really surprised to discover how good Rebels was as well. It is admittedly a smaller story, in the sense that it isn't about an army or an order or the fate of the galaxy but rather it is a story about a boy who finds himself a family and learns to grow up. Of course it is also a story about the fate of the galaxy because the fate of the galaxy hangs on all the little stories put together.
The story starts out with a more comedic and madcap energy but that fits with the age that the main character Ezra is at. As Ezra ages so does the tone of the story. Ezra is almost accidentally adopted into a crew (family) made up of really fun and dynamic characters who have all survived some sort or trauma. Much of the story line is devoted to the interplay between all of the crew members as well as plenty of focus on their individual issues, and all of that is painted onto the backdrop of the Rebellion against the Empire.
One of the stand out parts of this show is a very believable and well earned redemption arc for one of the main villains. I feel like this is really quite something in a children's program, but they pull it off so well that I feel it could be a model for other media.
You also get a lot of cameos and references to characters and events in The Clone Wars so I would recommend starting with that one, just be sure to keep going on to Rebels. :D
Non-Rec: Hot Damn, This Is My Jam

They are singing my song for this challenge, and no mistake! :D The biggest difficulty is keeping it down to a reasonable list, and I also was torn about listing stories that I eventually would want to use in my daily recs but I don't think any of them will suffer from being rec'd more than once. :D
Okay so I've put together a fairly eclectic list of epic length stories that I have enjoyed in the last month or so without further ado:
Allies by kanadka - Babylon 5 | Marcus Cole/Neroon | Mature | 146,715 | The Rangers' cover was blown on Zagros VII, but they're not done with the Drazi yet. Marcus is sent back to see what he can do to make amends and possibly a new Ranger outpost, while he's at it. Unfortunately, he's still healing from his bout with Neroon, and will need some assistance. He's a little disappointed with the Entil'Zha's choice in bodyguard.
In An Ideal World, Things Would Have Been Different by nanuk_dain - The Sinking of the Laconia | Werner Hartenstein/Thomas Mortimer | Explicit | 127,914 | Sometimes you meet the right person at the very wrong time, Hartenstein thinks while he's watching the Wehrmacht soldiers lead Mortimer away to their waiting vehicle.
Now because those might be just a little more than you might have time for, I've got a selection of shorter stories from this last Yuletide that I liked as well. :)
A Favour for a Friend by queuingtrilobite - The Mummy | Ardeth Bay/Jonathan Carnahan | Teen | 4,682
Learning to Connect by lc2l - I Robot | Del Spooner/Sonny | Teen | 7,421
Tilting at Millstones by notkingyet - Moby Dick | Ishmael/Queequeg | Teen | 3,323
Your Answers, Please by katherine_tag - Live Free Die Hard | John McClane/Matt Farrell | Explicit | 13,035
That is what I got. :D Hope you enjoy!
Non-Rec: Tooting My Own Horn

Okay, so the lion's share of my fannish activity is the fanfic recs that I post for my blog : Fanfiction Recommendations by Isabelle Disraeli and that also includes all of the graphics on my site which I'll admit to being proud of. ;)
Since doing Snowflake last year I've written two stories, which is the sum total of my writerly output so while not much I was rather please I did the thing at all. :) First there's A Sky Full of Stars which is Fandral/Hogun from Thor/MCU and it is family friendly. Second is Kissed by Fire which is seriously just porn with Aulë/Mahtan from the Silmarillion and may Tolkien have mercy on my soul. Lol.
I've also sent a significant amount of time on DeviantArt this last year being very behind the times but having fun with doll dress-up games and making many fannish works with them. :)
Non-Rec: This Is the Literal Worst

My least favorite thing about gifts giving holidays like Christmas and birthdays is the inevitable question of "What do you want?" I might as well have a Shadow asking me for all the discomfort that I feel when ask this by my friends and family. Ugh. I know what I like when I see it but thinking up things to want *sigh* it's so hard.
But for completeness sake, I wish for all of you to just keep doing what you are doing. You are all terrific! :D
Non-Rec: An Introvert's Ultimate Challenge

For an introvert (which I know many of us are) this is one of the harder challenges. I've gotten it done but not without much hemming and hawing and in general far more hand wringing then it should really warrant.
In an effort to potentially make it easier for someone else I thought I'd do a brief run through of the canon material that I've consumed recently so that there is something for folks to comment on rather than just a "hi" out of no where. :D
So a couple of months ago the spouse and I caved and got Disney+ so that we could watch The Mandalorian. Feel free to come squee about it with me because I'm still not over how great it was. :D While we waited each week for the new episodes to drop we were able to rewatch The Clone Wars (just as good as I remembered) and I am so jazzed about a new season! (Ahsoka looks so cool!) We also finally got around to watching Rebels and I don't know why we waited so long! We went and saw The Rise of Skywalker, *sigh* well at least it's over with anyways. In amongst all the Star Wars, I was able to watch a season and a half of Gravity Falls but I haven't had time to finish it yet (though I'm given to believe the shit's about to get real). I've finally gotten Good Omens from my library and I'm just waiting for an opportunity to watch that. I'm excited. :) Currently, the spouse and I are having another rewatch of Babylon 5. I still love that show so much.
So what are you guys into? Come say hi, and let me know. :D
Non-Rec: Game-Plan a Story of Procrastination in Three Parts

I am absolutely rubbish at New Years Resolutions and while I know that plenty of folks are, I usually try to avoid making them so I don't feel like I've somehow failed myself. But, perhaps I can trick myself by not calling them "resolutions" so much as "vague thoughts about what I might find myself doing in the semi-near future". Before I drown myself in my own BS, I'll get to it.
1) I would like to be more consistent in my participation here on DW. To that end we move to . . .
2) Finish steam-lining my recs process so as to avoid major burn out again.
3) Investigate the logistics, equipment, and software needed to produce a podfic, because I have been having daydreams about doing that for a little while now.
I think I shall leave it at three, I don't want to frighten myself off. ;) I looked back at my list from last year, and I really only managed one out of three so here is hoping I can bump that up to two this year. :D
Non-Rec: Perpetually Out of the Loop

XD I'm not really sure what even to put as I've been out of touch for a little while so I had a looky through the comms I follow and found some that are reasonably active. :) So without further ado and in no particular order:

Non-Rec: All the Fandoms I've Loved Before

Challenge #2
In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Well not ALL of them, we really don't have that kind of time. ;)
I suppose I started as a child doing fannish things that I did not really think of in those terms, but I first started thinking of fandoms and fannish things in those terms around the close of the nineties and in the early aughts. My first "Fandom" that I thought of as a fandom that I was in was Buffy the Vampire Slayer and very shortly after that Lord of the Rings and the prequel trilogy of Star Wars. In the really early days, my naivete lead me to believe that "Slash" was analogous to slasher films meaning that they were especially violent or gory stories and I know that that was not for me. But along came LotR and all it's soulful and longing looks, and I was made aware of what it really meant. I returned to BtVS and Star Wars with new eyes.
In those days, I lurked never really confident or comfortable with interacting with anyone in fandom but I read and watched and thought that wouldn't it be nice to be involved. And then I would stumble upon a ship war and thank my lurker stars that I was well out of it. I spent time in many fandoms in the early to mid aughts; Smallville, due South, Stargate Atlantis, Harry Potter, various anime fandoms.
By the early teens, I was very much in love with fanfiction in general which I have heard describe as its own genre which I think it a fair assessment. Despite this for a short time I for some convoluted personal reasons tried to "give up" fanfiction and be more "grown up" or "normal". This was so foolish. I was only out for six to eight months tops and found that I missed these fictional characters like long lost friends and finally stopped punishing myself. Loving fanfiction didn't have anything to do with age and normal (whatever that really means) was not something I ever was or ever would be and I needed to except that. Once I did that I was much happier. This epiphany lead me to think that I would like to give back, but I didn't know what that would look like.
After months and months of research and daydreaming, I started my first blog on Tumblr in April 2014 recommending the fanfiction that I enjoyed so much. I did it as much for myself as anyone else as I had been reading so long and loved so many stories I was having a hard time keeping track of the good stuff and this provided me a way to look back when I wanted to re-read something (because I almost always want to re-read the good ones). But despite that self motive, it always makes my day to discover that I have done the same by steering them to a story that worked for them.
When Tumblr arbitrarily changed their policy on nsfw posts in December 2018, I decided to look for a better fandom home which led me to Dreamwidth. For the first half of 2019, I was super jazzed about being more involved with fandom and it's people than ever before, but by the summer I was burnt out. After five years of daily recs and I huge six-month-long push to put all of my past recs on WordPress, I was just too tired to do anything.
Since the fall I've been re-engaging in fits and starts, and I'm really excited to participate in the Snowflake Challenge for the second year. :D
Non-Rec: Why Can't We Be Friends

I spent much of last night reading through peoples entries, commenting and friending. And while I might be a little behind the eight ball boosting, this is a wonderful wrap out to

Non-Rec: Reflections on a Snowflake
I'm still pretty new to Dreamwidth having only decamped from Tumblr in the opening days of December but the Snowflake Challenge was one of the first things I learned about. I spent the rest of the month eagerly awaiting this Fandom Event that was going to happen, and I find myself not the least bit disappointed. :)
I loved the real sense of connection and community that developed from participating in something all together, and the chance to meet and interact with folks that I might not have otherwise. I loved that the challenges were challenging, and that I've gotten a chance to stretch my fannish wings but all with the warm encouragement of other Snowflake participants.
I have had such a wonderful time, and I'm hoping that the connections and energy of Snowflake will last into the coming year!
Non-Rec: Histories Not Yet Written
That really is hard to say, I'm no mover or shaker but for my own self I do hope that there continues to be a viable and active community here on Dreamwidth. If more of fandom ends up over on Pillowfort or Mastodon I may find myself tempted to give them a try, but I'm quite content to tend my own little slice of fandom here and on WordPress. I can't properly express though the comfort it gives me that we have AO3 and the OTW to rely on for archiving.
Over all the shape and character of the internet seems to be changing so it feels impossible to predict where we are all going. Five years ago I would never have guessed I'd be here (and very happy I am to be here too), who knows what another five years will bring.
Non-Rec: I Have a Good Feeling About This
Phew, I feel so much better than yesterday, the headache is gone and my brain is back online. I wanted to say thanks again for all your kind well wishes, it really brighten my day. :D Now on to the challenge! I am rubbish about New Years resolutions, but when I sat down and had a think about it I discovered that I definitely have some fannish things that I would like to accomplish this year.
1. I would like to fill in 2019's recs sooner rather than later so that I can feel like I have breathing room for other projects. (This is a discipline issue and I'll probably have to be quite stern with myself, which is not a forte of mine. :P)
I think that is enough to be getting on with for this year. :)
Non-Rec: Accept the Challenge, Take the Break
Today, I have a killer headache so I'm going to borrow a challenge I've see around on other people's pages. Take a break, take care of yourself, and to tell yourself that it is totally okay to do that. :D
Challenge accepted. ;)
Non-Rec: Flying by the Seat of My Pants, with Careful Planning & Spreadsheets
So barring a few recent forays into other types of fannish content, my bread and butter has been fanfiction recommendations for quite some time now. I'll usually write a short explanation about why I've enjoyed a story (somethings it's little more than textual flailing) and that really wouldn't be hard except for some reason I decided that I would do this once a day, everyday.
The reason I am able to do this can be summed up in one word. . . Spreadsheets. Oh, I have so many spreadsheets. This allows me to keep everything organized and to be on top of my output despite the fact that I will go long stretches of time when I read no new fanfic at all. It's kind of feast or famine, all three hundred sixty five recs for 2018 were all done in a very active 2017. (Consequently this allowed me to move to two new platforms, WordPress and Dreamwidth, in 2018 without my output suffering).
I really need to get back into the swing of things soon though, I've less than a month to go with already prepared recs. It's hard though, winter has always been my least productive season (I'm not really sure why) but I see the deadline in the distance. ;)
Non-Rec: Something That Might Be a Story
Non-Rec: An Act of Fannish Kindness
It was suggested that we look back at Day 6 to find something nice to do for someone, so that is what I've gone with. The lovely
